Hello all! How is it almost Halloween already?! This year really seems to have flown by, but this is just the beginning of my favorite time of year: there are pumpkins and costumes and candy to come so, so soon – then comes my birthday and Thanksgiving, and I do love to cook – followed by twinkle lights, gift giving, holiday baking, and lots of quality time spent with those we hold dear. But I’m getting ahead of myself – right now we’re all about PUMPKINS. Orange pumpkins, white pumpkins, green pumpkins, pink pumpkins, and more… they can all be found in the cutest little pumpkin patch, tucked into a tiny corner of the more industrial area of Santa Cruz.
It’s called the Post Street Farm, and they have expanded from being just a pumpkin patch a few years ago, to now: prize-winning dahlias all around, hives of bees, a rooster, tomatoes and peppers, three bunnies, and a sweet little dog. Scattered between the dahlias are pumpkins and gourds, as well as some spooky Halloween decorations…
It was so fun to just enter a space and let your senses take over – here, there is so much to see, smell, hear, taste, and touch. See the variety of blooms, smell the flowers and tomato plants (there is something beautiful about the smell of tomatoes on the vine), hear the bees buzzing around, taste the honey or peppers, and feel all of the different kinds of pumpkins – and there are many!
They even had a beautiful persimmon tree, which I’m hoping will ripen soon – I want to try to make a persimmon pudding this year at Christmastime. We went with friends to the pumpkin patch and it was so fun sharing ideas for pumpkins, baking, and just exploring all together. Our final picks for pumpkins can be seen in our little wheelbarrow below:
We also have some jumbo orange pumpkins to carve, but we love supporting local businesses like Post Street Farm when we can! It’s truly about the experience when you go there. Have you been to the pumpkin patch yet this October? What will you carve your pumpkin like this year? Let me know in a comment below!
