Article: Why We Wear What We Wear

Why We Wear What We Wear
We’re switching things up this month.
Instead of starting with the jewelry itself, we went down a bit of a rabbit hole into the psychology behind why we wear what we wear.
Why do some pieces become part of us while others stay in the box? Why does forgetting one ring feel strangely wrong? Why can a necklace hold more meaning than something far more expensive…
Turns out, jewelry can do a lot more than finish an outfit. It can carry memory, signal identity, connect us to people and places, and sometimes just make us feel a little more like ourselves. That felt worth exploring.
The pieces that become part of us
Most of us have at least one piece we reach for without thinking. The earrings that somehow work with everything. The ring that feels strange to leave the house without. The necklace that has quietly become part of getting dressed.
Psychologists have looked at this idea through something called the “extended self,” which is basically the idea that the things we own can become part of how we understand and express who we are. Jewelry fits that especially well because we wear it so close to us.
Over time, some pieces stop feeling like accessories and start feeling more like part of our everyday identity. Jewelry can be a way of communicating without really saying anything. Sometimes it tells other people something about us. Maybe we like things that are minimal, bold, handmade, colourful, unusual, or quietly classic.
But what we wear can also say something back to us. A piece can make us feel more put together. More confident. More like ourselves. Sometimes that’s the whole reason we put it on.

Why do some pieces carry so much memory?
Jewelry also has a way of collecting meaning. A ring can remind you of a person. A necklace can take you back to a trip. A pair of earrings can become tied to a specific season of your life.
At that point, the value of the piece has very little to do with what it cost. It matters because of the story attached to it.
That’s part of what makes handmade pieces so special too. When you know who made something, where it came from, or why it was created, it already carries a little more meaning before it ever becomes yours.
Maybe that’s why we’re drawn to pieces that feel considered.
Good materials. Interesting design. A maker behind them. Something that feels personal enough to keep reaching for.
At Copper & Fern, that’s part of what we love about handmade jewelry. The story doesn’t start when you buy it. It starts with the person who made it, the materials they chose, and the idea behind the piece. You get to carry it forward from there.
Not everything needs to become an heirloom. Sometimes you just really love the earrings. But the pieces we keep wearing tend to have something in common: they feel like us.
Maybe that’s the point. The best jewelry doesn’t just finish an outfit. It becomes part of the story.
